San Mateo News SATURDAY, AUGUST 16, 1997
Her husband Eddy Mejia had just left for work; he is a computer operator at the University of San Francisco. Everything seems normal and the baby is expected 2 weeks from today.
It is just past 11 pm and she feels her first labor pain. This is her second child, so from her first pregnancy she remembers those false labor pains, and decides to start walking around the house as recommended by her doctor.
Her mother-in-law starts to time the contractions, not knowing if they were labor pains to find out they are 5 minutes apart. The contractions are so close Sadhana decides to call her husband to let him know the baby is coming.
Immediately he leaves work and rushes home to pick her up. When he arrives the labor pains are now 2 minutes apart and they decide to drive to Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City, where they are registered.
As they drive off she tells her husband, "Hurry the baby is coming". It's Friday night and traffic on Highway 101 is very busy but at the limit.
When they pass Millbrae, Sadhana tells her husband her water just broke. He tells her to grab the towels they brought in case she needs them. The pains are now getting more intense and she feels the baby coming.
Eddy continues to drive as fast as possible going over the speed limit. They just passed Burlingame and entered San Mateo. She then informs Eddy that the baby is coming, takes her stockings off and delivers a healthy 8 lb baby boy, Alexander Angelo Mejia, in the car. She notices that he is very clean and that she has allot of energy after just giving birth.
Eddy hears a little voice and pulls over to wrap Alexander up in one of the blankets they brought.
Taking the first exit off the freeway they make their way to Mill's Peninsula, the hospital where their first son was born, and to their shock they find the hospital closed. There is a sign pointing to Emergency that is around the corner, so they go off to Emergency where they are helped out by the security guard. The nurses and doctors are very helpful and let Eddy cut the umbilical-cord and contact Kaiser for an ambulance to take them.
